Please confirm that these requirements are met for your specific vehicle prior to ordering as well as any other specific rules to your state or local jurisdiction:
- Size: At least 2 inches high.
- Legibility: Must be clearly visible from 50 feet away.
- Contrast: The color of the letters must contrast sharply with the vehicle’s background.
- Content:
- The motor carrier’s legal name or single trade name, as listed on the MCS-150 form.
- The motor carrier identification number, preceded by the letters “USDOT”.
- Placement: The markings must be on both sides of the commercial motor vehicle (CMV).
- Purpose: To improve visibility at night and reduce accidents.
- Application: Mandated for trailers over 10,000 lbs GVWR manufactured after December 1, 1993, and straight trucks over 10,000 lbs GVWR manufactured after July 1, 1997.
- Placement:
- Rear of Trailers: Horizontal red and white strips across the full width.
- Sides of Trailers: Alternating red and white strips covering at least 50% of the trailer’s length.
- Rear Upper Corners: Inverted “L” shapes of white reflective tape.
