Whether you’re designing branded stickers for your business, product packaging, or a creative marketing campaign, understanding the difference between die cut, exact cut, and halo cut stickers can save you time and elevate your final product. In this guide, we break down these popular sticker styles, compare them side by side, and help you decide which sticker type is best for your needs.
Die cut stickers are cut precisely to the shape of your design — every curve, edge, or outline. If your logo is a funky cactus or a lightning bolt, a die cut will follow that exact silhouette.
Pros:
Best For: Custom logo stickers, giveaways, and packaging where the shape stands out
An exact cut sticker is often used interchangeably with “die cut,” but there’s a slight distinction. Exact cut refers specifically to the vinyl or sticker layer only being cut to shape, while the backing paper remains square or rectangular.
Pros:
Best For: Retail packaging, bulk distribution, shipping inserts
Halo cut stickers (also known as kiss cut with border or semi die cut) have a thin, usually white or clear border around the sticker design. The sticker is cut through, but a small margin is left around the edge, making it easier to peel and giving a unique look.
Pros:
Best For: Intricate designs, art stickers, laptop decals, or e-commerce shops
Now that you know the main cut styles, here’s a breakdown of popular sticker materials and finishes that pair with them:
Durable, weatherproof, and long-lasting — vinyl stickers are perfect for outdoor use, water bottles, laptops, and cars.
Pairs Well With: Die cut, halo cut, exact cut
These stickers shine with an iridescent rainbow finish. Great for standing out!
Pairs Well With: Die cut or halo cut for a futuristic pop
Printed on transparent vinyl. Ideal for windows, bottles, or subtle branding.
Pairs Well With: Exact cut or halo cut (die cut can look too minimal)
Adheres without adhesive using static. Great for store displays or temporary signs.
Best Cut: Exact cut or square cut
Used for product labeling, packaging, or large quantity applications. Usually printed in bulk.
Cut Style: Typically kiss cut on rolls (square, circle, or custom shapes)
Weatherproof with a strong adhesive and a more rectangular format.
Cut Style: Rectangle or oval, often with a halo
These stickers can be removed cleanly and are great for promotions or rentals.
Best Cut: Depends on application, often halo or exact
Meant for rugged use — construction, toolboxes, outdoor gear.
Finish: Gloss or matte lamination
Cut: Die cut or halo cut for durability
